Chapter Twenty-Five

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Turner watched Kenny closely as the vampire took a seat next to his hostage, who’d already been fed on and looked a little worse for it. He had no doubt that Kenny was capable and willing to kill the girl. The vampire’s plan wasn’t entirely foolproof though. The girl wouldn’t be conscious in a few hours time. A quick evaluation and it wasn’t hard to see there was no chance in hell she’d make it through the next ten minutes without passing out. Turner only hoped there would still be time to get her help once his chance to deal with Kenny came.

“Why are you doing this?” Turner asked, deciding to let the minutes tick down on their own. Alerting Kenny to the holes in his plan wouldn’t resolve the situation any faster. He was going to have to hope the element of surprise when the worn out girl lost consciousness would be enough to let him gain the upper hand.

“I’m not sure yet,” Kenny said, glancing Zack over in undisguised hatred.

Turner wondered if Zack might have another episode. Surely if Pete’s presence had stirred one, this incident would too. He made up his mind to keep his concentration focussed on the girl, without making it overly obvious. She was the key to diffusing the situation.

“My car is close by,” Turner said. “Let the girl go and we can get to it without risking exposure to the daylight.”

Kenny laughed, just as he’d expected him to. “I’ll make the demands around here.”

Good, Turner thought. The hastily made offer had only come out of his mouth as a distraction, a way to avoid showing his real hand. He knew compelling Kenny would trigger the girl to do what the vampire had pre-programmed her to, so he needed to avoid the impulse to order him around. He didn’t have a lot of other options besides finding ways to distract him until the girl collapsed.

“Is she going to die?” Zack’s question was whispered, and unexpected.

Turner shook his head. “Kenny hasn’t taken enough blood to kill her. She’ll be fine. If we just do as he says.”

Kenny grinned. “It didn’t start out that way, but this is really turning out to be a half decent life-style change for me.”

Turner wasn’t that surprised. Most necromancers wouldn’t see becoming a vampire as a positive thing, but Kenny had always been a bit of a creep. He wasn’t surprised to find out he was taking to it so well.

“Vampires aren’t welcome in Shady Pines. Besides FBU members who uphold human laws and are punishable by execution if they break those laws. When the Council finds out you’re here...”

Kenny snorted and cut in before he could finish his warning, “Do you have any idea who my father is? Nothing will happen to me if the council find out about this.”

He sounded so certain. Turner knew who his father was, every Necromancer in Shady Pines did.
